Rear Recovery Points
Related Products
After cutting the chassis of Stumpy, and effectively losing his legality, I vowed never to cut / alter a chassis again... So, when it came to making a rear recovery point for my Vitara, I had to put my thinking cap on...
In order to pick up as many mounting points as possible, I had the above piece of angle iron capped at the ends and drilled, so that it would fit snugly over the end of the chassis. And the two pieces of angle iron with the three holes drilled in them are to match up with the tow bar holes in the chassis. The two tabs are for D-Shackle winching points. I had them made like this so that I could bolt the two angle iron pieces to the chassis's tow bar mounts and then cut the larger angle iron piece to suit, and then tack-welded it up, before taking it back to my Dad's fab' shop to have it welded up fully.
There we go, all welded up to suit. You can see how those tabbed recovery points were mounted in from behind and welded on both sides, rather than just been welded to the face of the angle iron mount.
Test fitted in place, you can see how the 12mm bolts on the ends fit into the chassis crossmember tube, they attach into a piece of tube hammered into the chassis tube with a concealed nut welded into the end of the tubes.
I then added some more tabs behind to stop the angle iron flexing across, if I'm ever towing...
So, as well as the bolts into the ends of the chassis' crossmember tube, there's also two bolts into the tow bar mounting points, and one huge long 12mm diameter bolt going right through the chassis rail...
There it is just under the body mount.
The finished article, recovery point overkill !, but nice to have as many options as possible Related Blogs
